چکیده

Lasing without inversion ~LWI! in specific models of closed three-level systems is analyzed in terms of nonlinear dynamics. From a linear stability analysis of the trivial nonlasing solution of the homogeneously broadened systems with on-resonance driving and laser fields, we find that, near lasing threshold, resonant closed L and V schemes yield continuous-wave LWI while resonant cascade schemes can give rise to selfpulsing LWI. The origin of this different behavior is discussed. For parameters of a real cascade system in atomic Ba we check numerically that the self-pulsing solution is stable in a broad range of nonzero detunings. It is shown that the self-pulsing emission can still be observed when the typical residual Doppler broadening of an atomic beam is taken into account. @S1050-2947~98!06803-6#

Lasing without inversion: Gain enhancement through spectrally colored population pumping.

We propose the use of spectrally colored rather than white (i.e., incoherent) population pumping in lasing-without-inversion schemes. We show that colored pumping can lead to a significant enhancement in gain by presenting explicit results for the gain in a three-level ladder system. These results are obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of the coupled density-matrix-equations, which, for a co...

LASERS WITHOUT INVERSION: DENSITY OPERATOR METHOD

A quantum theory of a two and three-level laser with injected atomic coherence is developed by using a density operator method, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time. The initial atomic coherence plays an essential role. At steady state, the equation of motion for the density operator yields to exhibit laser without inversion and a phase locking but no threshold for the laser fie...

Nonequilibrium phonon effects on electron transport in GaAs-based mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers

The dominant energy relaxation mechanism of electrons in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) is the non-radiative scattering with optical phonons [1]. Through optical phonon emissions, the injected electrons in the upper lasing level are rapidly transferred to the lower lasing level, and the carrier life time in the upper lasing subband is significantly reduced. Consequently, a large current must be ...

Measurement of subband electronic temperatures and population inversion in THz quantum-cascade lasers

We compare the electronic temperatures and the population inversion both below and above the lasing threshold in three quantum-cascade lasers sQCLsd operating at 2.8 THz, 3.2 THz, and 3.8 THz using microprobe band-to-band photoluminescence. In the lasing range, while the ground-state temperature remains close to the lattice one s90 K–100 Kd, the upper radiative state heats up to ,200 K. From th...

Evidence of lasing without inversion in a hot rubidium vapor under electromagnetically-induced-transparency conditions

We report a likely observation of cw lasing without inversion in a gas of hot rubidium atoms in an optical cavity under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency EIT . The medium is pumped coherently and resonantly by a single “coupling” beam which also produces EIT in the lasing transition. The steady-state intensity exhibits thresholds as a function of the atomic density and the ...
